Copenhagen 1919: A young female worker is unemployed and pregnant. She meets Dagmar, who runs an underground adoption agency. A strong bond develops, but her world falls apart when she discovers the shocking truth behind her work. Official Danish entry for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards in 2025. I liked the promise that society would be revealed as the real monster, not the people destroyed by it. However, telling the story through a character who is solely a victim distances the film from that goal. It is not a social critique when all evil is concentrated in one arch-villain, while everyone else is justified by their good intentions. On the contrary, it should be shown how, in such a brutal context, villains and sympathizers are not so easily distinguished. The tone was also a bit off — more melancholy than anything else — leaving the viewer indifferent to what was happening on screen.
